Nowadays, the issue of exploiting new transport corridors is becoming increasingly urgent. Further enhancement of "Great Silk Road" initiative with its great economic potential to boost economic growth and regional integration is under intense consideration. It implies rapidly evolving ground transportation, which results in reducing costs, growing revenues and increasing incomes in the state budgets of the countries involved. In parallel, the increased cargo turnover along the corridor will cause environmental problems/risks, namely, air pollution, harmful effects on agricultural products and human health, that is a global challenge.

For effective use of the transport route by the Member states, granting the environmentally friendly status to this corridor is extremely important; it will contribute to increasing the visibility and the realization of its full capacity. The interested actors should become more engaged in the processes of environmental recovery and apply joint efforts to provide the “eco-friendly status” to the above-mentioned transport corridor.

The Trans-Caspian International Route Association is implementing projects worth 6.5 billion USD. In 2022, a document was signed in Aktau (Republic of Kazakhstan), which was signed by Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey. By 2027, the cargo throughput of the Middle Corridor is expected to increase from 6 million to 10 million tons per year. At the first stage, the number of containers will increase from 80 thousand to 300 thousand, followed by an annual increase in this number. In 2023, 2.7 million tons of cargo were transported along the “Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR)”, also known as the Middle Corridor, which is 86% more than in 2022. At present, 11 countries are represented in the so-called Middle Corridor route by 25 companies. The international transport corridor begins in China, passes through Kazakhstan, the Caspian Sea, and passes through Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey, then connects to European countries via the Black Sea.

Armenia, Iran, and India are planning to launch a new trade route. According to Armenian media, this will be a real breakthrough in international logistics.

According to the publication, representatives of all three countries will meet in the near future. It is already known that the meeting will take place on Iranian territory.

As for the route, it will run from the port of Mumbai in India, through Chabahar in Iran, through the territory of Armenia, and enter Georgia, from where the products will be exported to the European Union countries.

Experts estimate that the new trade corridor will reduce logistics costs by four times, and shipping time will be halved – from 40 days to 18 days.

According to analysts, the successful implementation of this project is also considered a promising alternative to existing maritime routes, including those via the Suez Canal.
